Die 19. Asienspiele sollten vom 10. bis 25. September 2022 in der ostchinesischen Stadt Hangzhou stattfinden. Am 6. Mai 2022 verschob die Volksrepublik China die Spiele. Der Grund ist die COVID-19-Pandemie im Land mit der SARS-CoV-2-Variante Omikron. Nach 1990 und 2010 ist die Volksrepublik China zum dritten Mal Ausrichter der Asienspiele. Insgesamt werden 53 Wettkampfstätten, fünf Sportlerdörfer und 31 Trainingsstätten für die Asienspiele benötigt, 40 von ihnen befanden sich bereits 2019 im Bau. Mitte April 2020 berichtete das Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), dass über 85 Prozent der Bauten bis Ende 2020 fertiggestellt sein würden. Das Olympic Council of Asia gab am 19. Juli 2022 bekannt, dass die Asienspiele vom September 2022 auf den 23. September bis 8. Oktober 2023 verlegt wurden.
